External Challenges 2011-12 Rules of Play

External challenges are for outside players who want to join the ladder for the following season of play.  As an alternative to joining the wait list for a possible “walk on” spot at the bottom of the ladder on the bottom team, an experienced player can challenge in at an appropriate level.

It is important that a challenger understand the commitment involved in team membership as well as have the ability to practice and play at that team’s scheduled times.

In order to do an external challenge, a challenger must:

a. Pay a non-refundable challenge fee of $100 paid to the WPTC, collected at the external challenge meeting before selecting a challenge spot.

b. Commit to being on a team, including being able to play at scheduled practice and match time.

1)  Each external challenger will select a threesome on the ladder to challenge.  Internal wildcat challengers have priority for challenge groups.  As a result, some players may be unavailable for an external challenge.

2)  Each ladder member may accept only ONE external challenge.  If there are multiple challengers for the same part of the ladder, a lottery will be held by the Coordinator.  In the event a lottery is required, the coordinator has the discretion to require contiguous challenge groups so that unchallengeable gaps of one or two players are not left between groups.

3)  The challenger is responsible for setting up the match.  The club will pay for the court time but she must bring the balls, keep and turn in the scores at the end of the match.  Please call the Winnetka Park District (WPD) ice rink at 847-501-2060 to reserve the challenge times and call the Coordinator to inform her of the dates and times.

4)  The challenge must take place over two days with three 12-game sets played each day, for a grand total of 72 games for the entire challenge.  The challenger plays a 12 game set with each of the ladder members in the challenge group.  To determine order of play, the challenger brings four slips of paper marked X1, X2, O1, O2.  Each player draws a slip. X’s play first, then 1’s.  On the second day, using the results of the first day’s draw, the 1’s play together first and the X’s play together last.

5)  The score is determined by adding up the number of games won over the two days of play.  Order the players high score to low score to determine the outcome.  The challenger must beat two of the players in order to win.  If she does so, she will earn the ladder spot just below the 3 ladder members in her challenge group.  If she beats all three ladder members, she slots above the threesome.

6)  A new ladder, reflecting successful External challenges, will be distributed via email to the membership and to successful challengers at the end of the challenge period.
